Restaurant Review: Sea Rocket Bistro

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Last night, we invited Spike, Frog, Dog, and Luna out to dinner at Sea Rocket Bistro in North Park. Judging by their website, Sea Rocket has got to be the most sustainable restaurant in SD. All their food comes from local farmers, fishermen, and ranchers. In fact, they even have a map on their website showing where all the food comes from. Neat-o.

The restaurant was small and cozy. The ceiling in the main dining room was covered with old wine/beer cartons and large paper mache fish hung in suspended animation. The Christmas lights added some post holiday charm (not sure if they are up year round). And the smell when you walked in was heavenly! I couldn't wait to eat.

Once seated, we had a flight of local beers and ciabatta bread to start. The bread came with a lima bean spread, honey garlic butter, and olive oil. The honey garlic butter was so delicious. I could not stop eating it. There was a bit of texture to the butter so I'm fairly sure they used honeycomb. Yum.

For first course, I had a delicious tomato basil soup. I was originally interested in the urchin bisque but apparently that was rather large and I still wanted to get an entree. Nevertheless I was quite happy with the soup. Badge got some fresh oysters of which I had one. Very good. For main course, I had the seared scallops with mashed potatoes and greens, drizzled with olive oil. The scallops were cooked to perfection. Everything on the plate went right into my mouth. Badge had a pasta primavera with mushrooms, seasonal veggies, and gouda cheese. Also quite delicious.

And for dessert, I had a coconut cupcake and coffee, while Badge had a tangerine bread pudding. All in all, a great meal at a reasonable price! The service was a bit slow but it's definitely a small shop so understandable. Will go back for sure!

QWOP: Update 2

Friday, January 29, 2010

Well, I got to 64.8 last night...

And of course I just received an email tonight that Ferret got to 68.9. Not to mention Riley got to 50m like it ain't no thing.

This game is going to be the death of me...

QWOP: Update

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Ferret got 54.6. What a jerk. I am displeased...

QWOP

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Ok, yesterday Monkey sent me this stupid game KNOWING that I would get obsessed with it.

She always does this. And every time, the endless limits of my obsession never cease to amaze her.

But honestly, what did she expect once she told me Brendon got to 21 meters? I HAD to beat him (which actually didn't take too long). I got to 26 meters, but then....oh then...Badge got 34.5!!

My life was over.

The rest of last night was spent going back and forth between a) furiously trying to beat this score and b) madly troubleshooting software issues for a sequencing run. Gotta love multitasking.

Finally, in the dead of night, eyes twitching, hands cramping (ok maybe slight exaggeration), I got to 38.9 meters. Whew. I went to sleep an easy woman.

And tonight, in between baking snickerdoodles, I secured my victory with a score of 46.2.

Until the next obsession!

Restaurant Review: Market

Saturday, January 23, 2010

On Thursday, I picked up Badge from the airport and whisked him away to Market for a late dinner. Market is a upscale restaurant in Del Mar serving up local seasonal foods (they get a lot of produce from Chino Farms). It's been on our list of places to try but we just never got around to it. Lucky for us, I recently noticed they were participating in SD restaurant week. No excuses, it was go time.

The restaurant is on an isolated strip of El Camino Real. Pretty non-descript from outside (at least at night). The interior decor was nice and tasteful. Had a nice cozy feel to it. But hey, let's get to the food yeah? Here's the prix fixe menu:

Choice of First/Appetizers Course
Chardonnay Braised Artichoke Soup
Herbed Gnocchi, Buttered Dungeness Crab, Meyer Lemon Emulsion
Caramelized Forest Mushroom Tart
Rosemary Potatoes, Onion Confit, Bucheron Goat Cheese, Pickled Mustard Seed
New York Steak Carpaccio
Herbed White Cheddar Flatbread, Roasted Tomatoes, Wild Arugula Salad

Choice of Second/Main Course
Crispy Stuffed Jidori Chicken Breast
Roasted Garlic Whipped Potatoes, Root Vegetable Roast, Up Egg
Coriander Dusted Local Blue Ling Cod
Roasted Chiles & Hominy, Charred Tomatillos, Avocado Spiced Corn Crisp
Cast Iron Roasted Beef Filet
Crispy Onions, Winter Vegetable Roast, Portobello-Cabernet Jus

Choice of Third/Dessert Course
Market Bars
Peanut Crunch, Chocolate Mousse Cake, Caramelized Bananas
Huckleberry Cheesecake
Candied Orange Peel, Micro Basil
Warm Toasted Walnut Torte
Caramelized Apples, Sour Cream Ice Cream, Charred Dates

Once seated, we had a nice basket of bread and corn muffins. We also got a complimentary sampling of poached shrimp with mango salsa, served in a spoon. Tasty tasty. For our first course, I got the artichoke soup since I've been on a soup kick. It had a really nice blend of flavors, the creaminess was great with the lobster. Badge got the mushroom tart (below) which delicious. Nice flakiness and the goat cheese, oh the goat cheese! I ended up stealing the second half of his tart. No shame.

For our second course, I got the beef fillet. The quality of the meat was excellent! I gobbled it up along with my glass of cabernet. I also really enjoyed the puree on the side, tasted like parsnip maybe. Badge got the Jidori chicken which was also great. The way it was fried was reminiscent of katsudon (Asian fried cutlet). It was stuffed with spinach and a whole mess of goodness, topped with an egg. While we were quite pleased with both our dishes, we did notice they were a tad salty for our tastes. I think we've just gotten used to Asian foods which tend to have less salt. But other than that, wonderful!

For dessert, I got the walnut torte which I could have eaten three more of. Badge got the huckleberry cheesecake mmmm. All in all, a great experience and worth the price tag. They are extending restaurant week till the 29th if anyone is interested!

PS my apologies for the crappy pictures but I'm still trying to figure out how to work my iPhone camera. Can you believe there is no flash on this sucker? Although I still love it...my precious...

Socal Tornados?

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Yup, you read that correctly. T-O-R-N-A-D-O. Right here in sunny California.

The first of three storms hit today today and it's been raining cats and dogs. I thought the winds were strong in SD but apparently it's nothing compared to the tornado that officially landed in the Costa Mesa area. The tornado was accompanied by four waterspouts making this one of the worst storms we've had in a long time.

And it's not over! There are two more storms to come this week. Yikes!

At work, we lost power around 2:15pm. Everyone loitered in the hallways for forty five minutes hoping the power would come back. No go. At 3pm, I hopped in the car only to sit in traffic as everyone and their mom started to evacuate the area. Ironically, as soon as I got home, the power came back on and I was able to VPN into work.

I hope the storms won't delay Badge's flight on Thursday :(. Keeping fingers crossed.

Review: Food, Inc.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Here's another movie we've been meaning to watch for a while now.

Food, Inc. is a documentary about how corporatism has ruined the food industry. It explores everything from the meat industry (as expected), to exploited workers, to patents on genetically modified seeds. The film itself is well executed and delivers it's message quite effectively. What's the message? Well, by trying to do everything bigger and cheaper, food quality suffers, everyday farmers suffer, and the environment suffers.

Even though I think everyone should watch this movie, be warned that there are scenes that are tough to stomach. Particularly, the scenes showing mistreatment of animals. Now, don't get me wrong I've always been a carnivore. Even though I don't eat as much meat as I used to, I don't think I could ever give it up entirely. However, I don't want to eat beef from a cow that has been standing knee deep in it's own feces; I don't want to eat a chicken that is so fat it can't walk and has never seen the light of day. It's repulsive and disrespectful to nature. On the same note, I don't want to support monolithic corporations that bully farmers who barely make enough money to support themselves. It's unethical.

It's strange to see the ugly truth behind the American food industry. Maybe I'm naive but I don't think this shit happens in Asia. Asians aren't tree huggers but I certainly don't think their food is nearly as mass produced as the US. I've never seen huge grocery stores in Taiwan, it's always been about farmers markets (well and Costco now). How did it get like this in the US? Greed. Greedy greedy corporations. Same as the greedy corporations in healthcare, same as the greedy corporations on wall street. Sigh.

So what's a normal citizen to do? Well, in addition to the CSA delivery we get from Seabreeze Organic Farms, we're going to try to frequent farmers markets more often. La Jolla has a big one on Sundays that we'd like to check out. When shopping at grocery stores, we're going to make an effort to buy local and organic. The same applies for meat. During our frantic online research following this movie, Badge and I found Homegrown Meats, a local butcher shop in La Jolla that seems worth checking out. Sure it might be more expensive but I think for us it's a cause worth supporting (no judgement on anyone else). Lastly, we'd like to start frequenting more restaurants that use local, organic, seasonal ingredients. We already eat at the Linkery (delicious) but there are many others in SD to explore. In particular, I've always wanted to try Market in Del Mar. Luckily they are participating in Restaurant Week next week so I've made a reservation for Thurs. Bring on the good eats! On a side note: I stumbled across Alice Q. Foodie's blog during my research. She seems to have done a lot of research on local sustainable foods. I've added the link on my Fun Links list on the right.

It's great that Badge and I are super motivated to eat right but at the same time it's easy to become complacent and fall back in the same routines. Thus, I'm adding some new year's resolutions on this topic. Cuz, you know, I always keep all of my new year's resolutions :).

Review: Into The Woods

Saturday, January 16, 2010

A few days ago, I was delighted to find Into the Woods available to play instantly on Netflix. For those of you unfamiliar with this musical, it's simply awesome. It cleverly weaves several classic fairy tales into one big story, giving them a fresh new perspective.

The first act is my favorite because it's hilarious and so fun to watch. The second act is much darker and explores the characters on a deeper level. Let's just say not all stories have a happy ending (get it get it?).

My favorite character is either the witch or the baker's wife, and of course my favorite song is Agony, which is sung by the two princes (Cinderella's prince and Rapunzel's prince). Had me rolling in tears. So funny. I tried to find it on youtube to post but I couldn't find the original Broadway version. Ah well.

Anyway, I've been humming the songs all week. It reminds me of high school when we first heard the musical. Someone gave Monkey a tape and we'd listen to it over and over. Couldn't get those songs outta my head.

Highly recommended!

WHYYYYY

Thursday, January 14, 2010

My blackberry is awesome. Everything about it is so shiny and new. Me likes shiny and new. Me likes a lot.

So, I activated it today and have started eagerly adding contacts. BUT as I left work at 7pm, I see one last email trickle in...put in IT request for...

AN IPHONE!!!

Ok, seriously? Why couldn't this have happened just TWO days earlier BEFORE I ordered my blackberry? Oh the irony.

I mean I guess it's cool, I'll get a company phone. But then again I'll be enslaved to work. But then again I already am these days. But then again I was just getting acquainted with my Blackberry.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Well, if they do give me one, I guess I can transfer my blackberry to Badge. You know, keep it in the family. He has been wanting a new phone for a while now. And we'd still get to support Credo.

I repeat, oh the irony.

Oh Tuesday

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

It's just past midnight. I've spent the last couple hours doing work while finishing up the last episodes of Battlestar Galactica Season 3. And now, because Badge is not here to scold me for a) doing work late b) staying on the computer all day and night, I am writing a post.

So today, Illumina announced our new sequencer, the HiSeq 2000 (this is the project I've been working on the past few months writing software for). It's a huge deal because it's major milestone in sequencing. Very exciting stuff, I just hope we get all our ducks in a row before launch (and that it performs well in the field). As expected, our stock price leaped up (~15%) whoo hoo!

In more random news, I've ordered a Blackberry Tour which is arriving tomorrow. I need to be here to sign for the package so I'll be working from home. UPS graciously gave me the very specific window of 8am - 7pm, but I'm hoping they'll come in the morning so I can still hightail it to work. I've also switched from AT&T to Credo, which seems to be a socially and environmentally responsible company. They make donations to worthy causes and even let you vote where they should donate. Nice to see a company making the effort. Plus they use the Sprint network which is suppose to be much better than AT&T's. We'll see.

On Monday, I was planning to run at the gym but realized I left my lunch and a video card (to install a third monitor at work) at home. So, I decided to jog home, retrieve the articles, and jog back for a total of 3 miles. GOOD LORD it was hot that day!! Felt like 80, I was dying. On the way back, I had to carry a bag full of stuff (much larger than I had anticipated) and it made for an awkward half run/walk. All in all, I probably ran 2 miles and walked 1. Oh well, at least I tried.

Today I went to yoga which I almost bailed on because of work. An hour before class I was starving so I bought a 100 grand bar and a Twix double bar. I only meant to eat one, but of course I ate both. As anticipated, I felt mighty ill through the first part of class, esp in natarajasana. But it was a good hard class and I'm glad I went.

On a final note, I've been really into homemade nachos all week. Layer of chips, layer of beans, some delicious Whole Foods Chilean Salsa (that stuff is like crack), and sour cream. I ran out of cheddar cheese on my last nacho batch. Good stuff.

Movie Review: Let The Right One In

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Let The Right One In is a Swedish film about a 12 year old boy named Oskar who meets a vampire child named Eli. As you would expect, they fall in love. But unlike the typical mindless vampire love story (which is entertaining in it's own right), this movie was so much more. It was beautifully acted, filmed, and scripted. Everything was compelling. Unfortunately, I'm not good at writing reviews so that's the best I got. Watch it, you will not be disappointed.

Note: this is available to watch instantly on Netflix. We watched it on Roku last night (gotta love that Roku).

Already Burnt Out

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Seriously? The first work week of 2010 is over and both Badge and I are already burnt out. We've been been working like maniacs.

MANIACS I TELL YOU!! *twitch twitch*

For me, I'm working on a big project (not announced yet so I can't describe further). Work days have gone well into the night. It's no fun leaving the office at 7 only to go home and work until midnight. I even went into the office this morning to fix up the GUI. Blah.

Like Busy Mama, I just completed my self evaluation, which was really due yesterday. I always find my answers a bit cheesy but whatever. I've just submitted it and there's nothing to be done about it.

On to more interesting things...

My new year's resolutions are coming along OK. I made my glorious return to the Illumina gym on Wed for a pathetic 2.7 mile run (of which I probably walked 0.5 miles). It sucks starting over with running. My legs have been retardedly sore all week. On Tues and Thurs, I went to the lunchtime yoga at work because it was free. Thursday night, I went to real yoga at the studio and had my ass handed to me. Meant to go to yoga today but work got in the way. Even though I wasn't able to exercise as much as I wanted to this week, I've still lost some holiday pounds. Probably because I've been too busy to eat much and my muscles are atrophying. Poo. Skinny and flabby is not the goal. At least, there's yoga tomorrow.

In other misc news, I've been needing a watch for a while now so I ordered an Android watch off Gilt. It's pretty simple, nothing fancy, which is just want I wanted. Plus it was on sale from 69 to 35, and I had a 25 credit, so it was only 15 after shipping! Booyah.

We also got a Roku so we can watch Netflix stuff instantly (I've been hogging the queue recently with BSG). Will try it out tonight. Lastly, the second installment of my Jacques Torres chocolates came this week: champagne truffles in the shape of little corks!

I heart Mr. Chocolate.

Adventures with Riley: Part II

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Before I begin this post, let's take a minute to admire the new site layout! Looks nice eh? Yes, I did spend way too much time yesterday looking for a new blogger template. And yes, I also spent too much time editing the html to be exactly the way I want it. But in the end, we all benefit. Right, right? Ok, moving on.

On Thursday, Badge, Riley, Spike and I hustled over to Mira Mesa to watch Avatar on IMAX 3D. Thinking we were slick, we arrived an hour early, only to discover 60 people already waiting in line to enter the theater. Seriously? It's a noon showing people! Go home! At least, we picked up some grub from Panera to nibble on while we waited. Once the movie started, I got a little dizzy from the 3D effects but my eyes adjusted quickly. The movie itself was great. Straightforward plot, kick ass action scenes, amazing eye candy. What else could you ask for? I would definitely recommend seeing it in IMAX though. It's quite an experience.

We emerged from the movie a bit dazed (the movie was a little under 3 hours long), but had enough energy to stop by Whole Foods for some NYE grocery shopping. Once home, I whisked up a key lime pie (Riley's favorite) and made dough for the apple pie. Amazingly, the key lime pie recipe I found was very easy and used few ingredients. It came highly rated so I knew it'd turn out well. The pie crust recipe I found on Pioneer Woman's site. I've never been particularly satisfied with any pie crust recipe I've tried but PW hasn't let me down yet. Unfortunately I didn't have vinegar so I went without. I also might have incorporated the flour and crisco too much as my dough was wetter that I anticipated.

By the time I threw the dough into the fridge to chill, it was 5pm and the three of us were starving. We decided to eat our last meal of 2009 at Buga, a delicious Korean bbq restaurant in Clairemont. We ordered several sushi rolls and our usual bbq fare of bulgogi and galbee. Riley, who had never eaten Korean food before, found the meal tasty though he was no fan of the kimchi (Badge and I went to town on the kimchi). After dinner, I finished making the apple pie - the filling recipe came from Monkey - just in time to welcome the Gordon clan for our NYE gathering. That night, we played poker, snacked, ate pizza and pie, drank champagne and welcomed the new year. Happy new year everyone!

Key lime pie, topped with whipped cream and impromptu lime design (recipe at end of post). Was a hit with the family.

Apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Pie crust came out great!

Intense poker playing.

Badge taking the pot.

Grandkids with grandparents.

Kimbo and Sophie.

On the first day of 2010, we went to the park with the Geraghtys to throw the ol' pigskin around. I did some yoga on the side while the boys ran around. Sophie generally wandered towards the action, occasionally getting hit by the soccer ball but never crying because she's a badass. No seriously, she's the toughest toddler I've ever seen.

Riley throwing a Hail Mary.

Badge flexing his muscles. What a champ.

Best picture of the day.

Sophie wearing the Taiwan tshirt we got her. Too goddamn cute.

Sophie supervising Kris and I in downward dog.

That afternoon, we squeezed in some shopping and a quick settlers game. I won, making that 5 times in a row. Badge was very angry at me and sulked in the corner. Now I know how Monkey felt when I obsessed about beating her. At some point, we watched Rocky IV, my favorite. How awesome is the Hearts on Fire training montage? Doesn't it inspire you to just get out there and fight a genetically engineered Russian? Trivia: Dolph Lundgren (the Russian) went to MIT for a bit before dropping out to pursue acting.

For dinner, we met up with everyone again (Dog and Luna included) at Cozymel's, followed by ice cream at Ben & Jerry's.

On Saturday, Badge and Si went to play soccer in Point Loma. We met up afterwards and hit up In & Out for Riley's final CA meal of the trip. Then it was off to the airport where we said our farewells. Till next time, Riley!

1 1/2 cups finely ground graham cracker crumbs
1/3 cup white sugar
6 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar, melted butter or margarine, and cinnamon until well blended . Press mixture into an 8 or 9 inch pie plate.
Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 7 minutes. Cool. If recipe calls for unbaked pie shell, just chill for about 1 hour.

Apple Pie
Courtesy of Monkey

filling:
6 golden delicious apples (i used 6 granny smiths and i think i like that better)
2/3 cup sugar (bc grannies are more tart, i upped the sugar to 1 cup)
cinnamon (i just shake the cinnamon about. maybe 2 tsp? 1 tbs? this is flexible but don't overdo it)
dash nutmeg (i shake it a couple of times)
3 tbs flour

peel and slice apples (~ 1/2 inch slices is fine). combine all ingredients together in a big bowl. lay out your crust and put the apples in (mound in center). put the other half of pie crust on, crimp edges and cut 4 big slits in. shake more sugar on top of the pie.

the original recipe said to bake for 40-45 min at 350. cook's illustrated said to bake for 25 min at 425 and then lower temp to 375 and bake for 30 more min. i followed the cook's illustrated baking time but my edges got a bit burnt so next time i will do the 350. probably doesn't matter too much.

Sylvia’s Perfect Pie Crust
Courtesy of Pioneer Woman

1-½ cup Crisco (vegetable Shortening)
3 cups All-purpose Flour
1 whole Egg
5 Tablespoons Cold Water
1 Tablespoon White Vinegar
1 teaspoon Salt

In a large bowl, with a pastry cutter, gradually work the Crisco into the flour for about 3 or 4 minutes until it resembles a coarse meal. In a small bowl, beat an egg with a fork and then pour it into the flour/shortening mixture. Add 5 tablespoons of cold water, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir together gently until all of the ingredients are incorporated.

Separate the dough into thirds. Form 3 evenly sized balls of dough and place each dough into a large Ziploc bag. Using a rolling pin, slightly flatten each ball of dough (about ½ inch thick) to make rolling easier later. Seal the bags and place them in the freezer until you need them. (If you will be using it immediately it’s still a good idea to put in the freezer for about 15 to 20 minutes to chill.)

When you are ready to use the dough to make a crust, remove from the freezer and allow to thaw for 15 minutes. On a floured surface roll the dough, starting at the center and working your way out. (Sprinkle some flour over top of the dough if it’s a bit too moist.) If the dough is sticking to the countertop use a metal spatula and carefully scrape it up and flip it over and continue rolling until it’s about ½ inch larger in diameter than your pie pan.

With a spatula, lift the dough carefully from the surface of the counter into the pie pan. Gently press the dough against the corner of the pan. Go around the pie pan pinching and tucking the dough to make a clean edge.
