Fun Filled Times

Sunday, October 24, 2010

This weekend was fun. I haven't had a fun filled weekend in a while. It's like a breath of fresh air.

On Friday, we met up with our friends Purvi and Vishal at Sushi Ota for dinner. We ate many rolls including double double spicy tuna roll, crispy salmon roll, and california roll with real snow crab, and drank lots of sake. It was a great time. They're always a blast to hang out with.

Afterwards, we went to a party, held by the goalie of Badge's soccer team. Everyone was much younger than us but we still had fun. ESPECIALLY when they busted out beirut. Oh the memories. Badge and I got a couple games in, and though I was horribly rusty, I still enjoyed trash talking and sinking a few cups. Ah the memories.

On Sat, I went to yoga. In the afternoon, we drove down to Fashion Valley to pick up Badge's wedding ring from Tiffany's. He had it sized down because it was too loose. For lunch, we went to Wahoo's. Blackened fish tacos...so good.

Pleasantly full, we went to the Hazard Center to watch a movie. As it turns out, they were hosting the Asian film festival so the regular movie times were a bit off. We would have stuck around to watch an Asian film but the ones playing at that time seemed uninteresting. Instead, we went to the Mission Valley AMC and watched The Social Network. Pretty entertaining. It was definitely better than expected.

After the movie, we drove down to Banker's Hill for our dinner reservation at Cucina Urbana. We were early so we walked around and grabbed a quick drink at Barrio Star. By the time, we got back to Cucina and were seated, we were hungry and ready to EAT.

For starters, we got the antipasta board with three items. The first was an interesting stuffed pepper with couscous, oysters, and clam. Tasty but not my fav. The second was fig stuffed goat cheese and some sort of grape sauce reduction. So good! The third was a bruschetta with chickpea salad. It sounded boring but tasted heavenly. I could have eaten five of these.

We also got a plate of calamari, shrimp, soft shelled crab, and zucchini. It was fried. Need I say more?

For the main course, I got a goat cheese ravioli with toasted almonds. Light but satisfying with very well balanced flavors. Not your average Italian dish.

Badge got a pizza with house made mozzarella, house made sausage, and poblano peppers. Wow, this was an explosion of goodness in my mouth. Loved it!

For dessert, I had a pear parfait with my cappuccino.

Badge had an apple gratin with his espresso with sambuca.

Overall, a big A+ for Cucina Urbana. The ambiance was great, the server was great, the food was great. Everything was reasonably priced for the quality you got. Even their wines are retail price with a small corking fee (our bottle of wine was about the same price as ordering two glasses). On top of all that, they're very eco friendly. The waiter was telling us how everything is bought local. They even compost and recycle their cooking oil. Love it.

Today I was a tad hungover so I skipped yoga. Oops. In the afternoon, we went with Spike, Frog, Sophie, Dog, Luna, and Truffles (the real dog) to Escondido to visit the pumpkin patch. Wow, there were TONS of people there. I'm not kidding. It was baffling. We walked around for a while and it was nice to get out and do something different.

Tonight, Badge and I are parked on the couch, relaxing and watching tv.

Yes, I like weekends.

Chili For a Chilly Day

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

What do you do when it's rainy and cold out?

When you're stressed and tired?

You cook!

On Sunday, I made chili, using an old tried and true recipe. I omitted the sausage for no reason other than I just didn't feel like buying it. Doesn't really add anything noticeable in my opinion. Topped with cheddar cheese and sour cream, and sopped up with plenty of french white bread, this chili was definitely food for the soul.

Riding the cooking wave tonight, I finally got around to cooking the brussel sprout stalk I bought from TJ's last week. I've never actually bought sprouts on a stalk. Kinda freaky looking plant, no? Like alien brains with tentacles. I guess it's appropriate for Halloween.

I don't cook brussel sprouts often, but I do remember cooking them with my friends once during a dinner party (back when I lived in NY). I remember pan cooking them with chicken broth, a pinch of nutmeg, and plenty of butter. I mean it. PLENTY of butter.

I started these the same way but ended up tossing them in a dish, topping with parmesan cheese, and finishing off in the oven. Delicious! Great flavor.

To pair, I made baked lemon pasta, loosely following another tried and true recipe. Didn't get a chance to snap a shot since Badge and I fell on the food like ravenous beasts. The meal was instant cheer at the end of a long day.

I love food.

Illumina Wedding

Thursday, October 14, 2010

Last Sunday, Badge and I went to Trish & Ian's wedding, which was held at a private residence in La Jolla. The weather was warm, the alcohol was a-flowing, and there were many familiar faces a-foot.

Here's the happy couple lighting a candle with Trish's adorable son.

What Happened to Summer?

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

It's October already. What the heck?

We had a couple hot weeks this summer but otherwise it was a bust. Now the weather has moved on and it's rainy and cold. Well, not cold since it's San Diego...but brisk. Yes brisk.

Life has been busy with work. I'm hoping things will light up in November. Until then it's the usual hamster wheel: work, yoga, run. I'm trying to make a bigger effort to cook at home and not eat out. We've spent waaaay too much money at restaurants lately. Tonight I made a tasty pasta with mushrooms, edamame peas, basil, parsley, and a cream sauce. Yum!

That's all I got for tonight's stream of consciousness post. I'll try to be more interesting next time.

Return To Running

Monday, October 4, 2010

Today, I ran 5 miles for the first time in many years. Well a year and a half to be precise.

Granted it was on the treadmill and I was only going 10min/mile and my right hip was hurting most of the time, but I did it. Go me!

In unrelated news, I noticed the thumbnails on the left are missized when viewing in IE. Oops. I'll fix soon, I promise. In the meantime, I set it to text only.
